Let’s start with some simple definitions and let you know what you can expect when being measured.
Band Size
- This will be measured by placing a tape measure around your chest with the tape just above your bust and under your arms.
- The tape will be snug, but not tight, and we will round it to the nearest even number, i.e. 32, 34, 36. Sometimes we may have you try on multiple sizes if you are an odd number.
Bust Size
- Again the tape measure will be around your chest, but this time it will be placed over the fullest part of your bust.
- It is important that your elbows are kept down, the tape will be snug, but not tight.
Cup Size
- Bust size – Band Size = Cup Size
- Each additional inch of difference between the two sizes translates into an additional cup size
- 1″ difference = A cup, 2″ difference = B cup, 3″ difference = C cup, etc.
By far the biggest sin in bra fitting is placing a woman in too small cup size, and too large band size. Many stores simply do not have the selection to put you in the correct size. They will compensate for this by increasing the band size to make up for not having a large enough cup size to fit you. This will create a bad fit as shown in the “Wrong Size Bra” below.
Do NOT let yourself wind up in the wrong size bra! Not only will it be unflattering to your body, it can also cause immense discomfort and chronic pain!
We see this every day at Madame Pirie.
Women come in with the wrong size bra and complaining of the issues it causes. They leave with smiles on their faces after giving our staff a big hug for finally showing them how a well fitted bra should feel.
The band of the bra is what provides the support. It is your bra’s foundation. It should sit perfectly level around your chest and feel snug, like it is embracing you. If you find that it is riding up, and you are forced to pull it back down every time you move around a bit, then it is too big!! Do not settle for this in your bra (the most common problem). Sometimes it may also be too small; this will cause it to dig into your skin, and you may find some very terrible looking marks on your body when you finally do remove it.
Don’t let ill fitting bras become a sore point in your life. They will ruin your day and make you count the minutes until you can finally take them off. Let Madame Pirie put you in a bra that you can wear all day long.
Of course taking your measurements correctly is only the first step in putting you in the perfect bra. Visit the Why We Are Different page to find out how it is equally important to select the right brand and style for your body.
